Orca Arrived in Numbers, Humpback Whales Start South

A publication of Wild Ocean Whale Society (WOWs)

Orca Arrived in Numbers, Humpback Whales Start South

Many Northern Resident Orca of G-Clan came down Johnstone Strait and through Discovery Passage. There were Transient Bigg’s Orca popping up in a variety of places at the same time. These species do not mix, and will, if they’re in the same channel, hug opposite shores to avoid confrontation. Reports of Orca without knowing who is who can be confusing. We have some of these in our Unidentified Killer Whale category.

Humpback Whale reports indicate that many have started heading south. It’s especially gratifying to know that ‘KC’ who had been entangled is doing okay. Using our online maps and tracking, he was found soon after his entanglement and confirmed to be free of lines. But right after that, he disappeared again, which had many of us worried that perhaps he was injured. Another one of the disentangled Humpbacks we were involved with was also spotted off Powell River, close to where he was entangled. We continue to work towards educating the public enough to help us avoid these entanglements to begin with.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins were seen harassing the Northern Resident Orca, but scattered when the meat eating Transient Bigg’s Orca came near. A few Harbour Porpoise were seen, but not in the numbers we had early in the Summer. The other Species worth noting is a Sea Otter, spotted again still appearing between Mitlenatch and the Cortez or Marina Island reefs.
