Many Groups of Humpback Whales
During the past week, many Humpback whales were observed in upper Georgia Strait and in a number of inland waterways. Many Humpbacks were paired up but only a few were reported as mother-calf pairs. Some larger groups included up to 7 Humpback whales. Some of the Humpbacks were breaching, one of which was observed to be breaching continuously for about 30 minutes – that’s a good workout for a whale!
Transient Orca were observed in various inland waterways, notably in Cordero Channel and in Lewis Channel. One pod of Transient Orca in Denham Bay were observed hunting and successfully catching a dolphin. Transient Orca are very stealthy when hunting and members of a pod will work together to catch their prey. There were some sightings of Pacific White-Sided dolphins, with three pods estimated to each include approximately 100 members. Rounding our report are some sightings of Dall’s porpoises.
Boaters, please use caution on the water. There are Cetaceans out there. Effective June 1st, Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the animals. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.
WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
