Orca Breach!
Transient Orca were observed in various inland waterways. Orca display many behaviours at the surface including breaching. The cover image shows the belly side of an Orca as it was breaching. The Orca also has a strand of kelp which it may have been playing with. Of note is a Transient Orca pod that was observed hunting and catching its prey in Okeover Inlet.
The majority of reports, as with previous publications, have been sightings of Humpback whales and there are many of them around. The Humpbacks were mainly in Calm Channel, Sutil Channel, and upper Georgia Strait. Humpbacks were seen breaching and a few of them were slapping their pectoral fins. Many of the Humpbacks were observed travelling in circles, perhaps because they have found an area abundant in prey. A number of Pacific White-Sided dolphins were spotted, with one pod that included an estimated 150 individuals. A few Dall’s porpoises were observed, with one pod appearing off Qualicum Beach.
Boaters, please use caution on the water. Effective June 1st, Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the animals. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.
WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
