Whales Interact with Other Animals

Cover Image:
Humpbacks & Sea Lions playing between Rebecca Rocks and Harwood Island
Michelle Pennell, Powell River, BC

Whales are highly intelligent animals and they know “friends from foe”; whales and dolphins do interact with other animals and do display kind behaviours to them. Humpbacks, seals, sea lions, and sea birds often are found in the same location feeding on the same prey. On the occasion, a Humpback may take into its mouth a seal, sea lion, or bird, and with that realization, the whale will return to the surface and open its mouth to release the “by-catch”.

Often, we see whales and dolphins interacting with each other. Transient Orca will prey on dolphins, porpoises, and calves of Baleen whales. But other relationships are friendlier with some examples coming from sightings reported this past week. There were Northern Resident Orca travelling with Pacific White-Sided dolphins. On another occasion, two Humpbacks were surrounded by Dall’s porpoises. With such a diversity of ocean life and Cetaceans here in British Columbia, it will always be a unique experience to see interactions taking place naturally.

Boaters, please use caution on the water. Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Southern Resident Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the whales/dolphins. If you come across some Orca and you are uncertain if they are Southern Resident Orca, it is best to still maintain your distance of 400-m. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.

We acknowledge that our sightings map and archive map are not fully functional at this time, and we are working to resolve the issue.

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
