Pods of Pacific White-Sided Dolphins!

Pacific White Sided Dolpins in front of Powell River
Michelle Pennell, Powell River, BC

Over the past reporting period, a number of pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins were observed on different days near Powell River. The pods ranged in size; a few pods were estimated to include 50 dolphins and at least one pod that included about 100 dolphins. As spring approaches, larger pods of dolphins may be observed with some pods possibly numbering in the hundreds. These dolphins were named “White-Sided” because of their light-grey coloured flanks, whereas the rest of the body is darker grey in colour. Our sighting report includes sightings of Transient Orca, one sighting of a Humpback whale, and a pod of Harbour porpoises.

In our Magazine section, learn about a white coloured Risso’s dolphin nicknamed “Casper” observed off the coast of California and see some video footage of Orca preying on a Blue whale near Australia.

The Federal Government (DFO) statement about watching whales in the wild: “To address disturbance in the presence of whales, a mandatory 400-metre vessel approach distance for all killer whales is in effect starting June 1, 2020 in all southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet. The Marine Mammal Regulations continue to remain in effect year-round, including maintaining a minimum 200 metre approach distance from all killer whales in Canadian Pacific waters other than described above, and 100 metres for other whales, porpoises and dolphins OR 200 metres when the animal is in resting position or with a calf.”

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

Chinook salmon supply in winter key to survival of killer whales, study says
CBC News

The whales expand their menu and the distance they travel as they forage for food from October to March in the waters off California up to Alaska, which leaves them with little energy, says the study published Wednesday [March 3] in the scientific journal Plos One….
