The Dorsal Fins of Orca

One of the obvious and visible signs of the presence of Orca are their dorsal fins rising out of the water when they surface to breathe. Adult male Orca have dorsal fins that can be up to 2-meters tall, which is taller than many of us! The male dorsal fins can be spotted from many kilometers away (e.g. 6-8 km) with the use of binoculars. The dorsal fins of female Orca can be up to 1-meter tall so the females can by identified by their fins as well.

Sightings of Transient Orca occurred in various waterways and channels. Many Humpback whales are in Sutil Channel and upper Georgia Strait. Some of them were observed breaching, and on a few occasions, some of the Humpbacks were observed slapping their pectoral fins onto the surface of the water. A few pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins were seen, with the largest pod numbering around 100 members.

The Federal Government (DFO) statement about watching whales in the wild: “To address disturbance in the presence of whales, a mandatory 400-metre vessel approach distance for all killer whales is in effect starting June 1, 2020 in all southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet. The Marine Mammal Regulations continue to remain in effect year-round, including maintaining a minimum 200 metre approach distance from all killer whales in Canadian Pacific waters other than described above, and 100 metres for other whales, porpoises and dolphins OR 200 metres when the animal is in resting position or with a calf.”

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
