Northern Resident Orca at the North end of Georgia Strait

Northern Resident killer whales surfacing!
Michelle Pennell, Powell River, BC

On October 10th, Northern Resident Orca were observed near Powell River in the middle of the day and they were headed north. Usually, the Northern Resident Orca are found along the north-east coast of Vancouver Island and further north along the coast of British Columbia. However, a few times each year they swim further south and enter the top end of Georgia Strait and Malaspina Strait. The Northern Resident Orca has a population of approximately 330 individuals, whereas the Southern Resident Orca population is smaller numbering around 75 individuals (and critically endangered). All Resident Orca feed on fish, with salmon as their preferred prey. There was one sighting of a single Common dolphin in Hecate Channel (central Vancouver Island). It is rare to see just one dolphin on its own as they usually travel in pods. In addition, this single Common dolphin was quite far from the Pacific ocean, having swam quite a distance up the waterway to where it was located. Of note is the sightings of sea otters off the south end of Vancouver Island.

As a reminder that if you are boating and out on the water, please be aware of the presence of whales and dolphins. Signs of their presence may include blows of the Cetaceans and other boats stopped or moving slowly in an area. Boats and other water craft (e.g. kayaks) must remain at least 1-km away from Southern Resident Orca and at least 200-m away from other Orca (Transients and Northern Residents). See the full government regulation in the following paragraph.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Keep 1,000 metres away from Southern Resident killer whales in southern B.C. coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet. Keep 200 metres away from all other killer whales in British Columbia (B.C.) and the Pacific Ocean”. A minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing any Cetaceans that are resting or with a calf. When viewing whales, dolphins, and porpoises under other circumstances not described above, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept. A great resource for up to date Canadian or US regulations: Be Whale Wise Guidelines.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

Scientists search for answers as baby whales wash up dead in Argentina

Investigators in Argentina are trying to solve the mystery of baby whales washing up dead in unusually high numbers along the countryâ??s Patagonian coast.

Scores of the calf carcasses have been washing ashore around Peninsula Valdes, a major breeding ground for southern right whales in Argentinaâ??s Chubut province.
