Whales at either end of Vancouver Island
With the only reports of Whales near the outside reaches of Vancouver Island, things have been very slow around here. The closest report of Orca is Izumi Rock, the West end of Robson Bight in the upper reaches and Westbound out into the open Pacific by the San Juans. There are some Humpback Whales in the Broughton’s, with a few travelling up and down Johnstone Strait which is the norm for this time of year, and there have been reports of Dall’s Porpoise and Pacific White Sided Dolphins. But things are extremely quiet otherwise.

2 pm A30 and A23 Matriline of Northern Resident Orca Easting into the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve at 1400 hrs – Long runs, but we got to see them.

Humpback Whales
September 16:
1:30 PM Humpback Whale known as ‘Stripe’ was foraging at Cracroft Point (top end of Johnstone Strait) at 1330

2 pm 1 Humpback Westing by Forward Bay, Johnstone Strait and 2 more Humpback Whales close to the Vancouver Island side of the Strait.
Pacific White Sided Dolphins
September 16:
3:30 pm Lags (Pacific White Sided Dolphins) spread out over a 3 mile radius at Broken Islands Johnstone Strait some days it seems like there’s 1,000 of them. 15:30 Hard to tell what they’re chowing down on. Pilchards or Herring. Big Jumps and lots of speed swimming.

Dall’s Porpoise
September 16:
10 Dall’s in Bute Inlet 10:15 am Bow Riding. Good Grizzly Bear day – 700 lb bear! Sounded like all those dolphins were around Eve River and the Orca at Izumi and Cracroft!.
