Whales and Dolphins Galore!
We have a plethora of whales all over the inside waters. Humpback Whales that don’t usually stay in Georgia Strait and Desolation Sound seem to enjoy the food they’re finding. Southern Resident Killer Whales also decided to venture farther North of their usual foraging area to feast on some salmon by Campbell River. The Northern Resident Orca are still only venturing as far down as Nodales Channel. Transient Bigg’s Orca are popping up here and there and have managed to scatter many of the Pacific White Sided Dolphins down from Knight Inlet. The dolphins are now harassing and following the Resident Killer Whales. Dall’s and Harbour Porpoise numbers are down, which might also be attributed to the Transient Bigg’s.

5:01 pm: My husband just saw a Humpback moments ago near the mouth of Teakerne Arm from our sailboat. Sadly the camera is here at home with me. He thinks there was a chunk out of the tail fluke.
Tanja Hanson, Powell River.
(Thanks for the update Tanja. The one with the chunk out of her tail is most likely BCXO380 (Zed) as in the photos you sent for the previous report. Really interesting that she’s staying in the same area – did she have her "pet" log with her? She’s been using one for protection. Again we have received a number of calls about this humpback possibly being entangled, but after having some people get a very good look, there are no lines to be entangled with, and the whale has learned that boaters tend to avoid logs, so appears to stay with the log as a method to avoid being struck. Humpback Whales rest on the surface, so the log is a good choice. – S.M.)
Aug 27:
10:00 am: Good Morning! Good start to the day – we just had a very deep diving Humpback off the Francisco Point shore, close to the beach. We saw it briefly then he went down for 13 minutes, upon arrival and a good look it is our friend the ‘Kelp Creature’. Boy, does he get around!

The Vancouver Aquarium has decided to take the Parks Board to Court over the recent decision taken by the Parks Board to end the breeding of captive cetaceans at the Aquarium. The Aquarium continues to argue that the breeding program is a necessary adjunct to research on whales in the wild. Here are the details:
A strange turning of the tables as Humpback Whales are sighted harassing Orca; it’s usually the other way around!
The media have been posting quite a few news stories about the large number of Orca sightings in these waters recently. Another link (below this one) explains why there are so many more Salmon around than usual.
Have you seen a whale, dolphin or porpoise?
