Many of the Cetacean species have been running into one another as they forage, hunt and travel. With all the activity, it had become a bit confusing to tell whether the Killer Whales being seen were Northern Resident Orca or Transient Bigg’s, so you may find a number of the reports in the Unidentified section until some identifications are made. Our map also appears quite tight with the overlapping reports so you will need to zoom in more to distinguish the different locations. Humpback Whales are still finding food throughout the areas as is the one Grey Whale still off the Sechelt area. There are plenty of Pacific White Sided Dolphins and Dall’s Porpoise, which is a good think since they are being preyed upon by the Transient Bigg’s Orca. There are few reports of the little Harbour Porpoise and it is a bit of concern since we had one stillborn wash up around the Powell River area. They have such high metabolism rates that being chased by Orca could actually make them succumb.
