Humpback Whales a Leaping, Resident and Biggs Orca and Dolphins

Humpback Whales have been breaching all over the place. The photos in this issue show some of them. Having this many in the upper Georgia Strait is truly unprecidented. A few taking a snooze at the surface put themselves in danger with all the speeding unattentive boats around. We can’t stress the need for boaters to be aware and go slow if you see a blow! Take the N-E-W-S attitude in the vicinity of Whales: Neutral, Enjoy, Wait, and definitely go Slow.

Northern Resident Orca pod known as the A30s were last reported heading out into Blackfish Sound with no other information submitted to us as to their whereabouts. But the Transient Biggs (meat eating) Orca of the T002C family and T049s were close around some Humpback Whales. The Biggs are stil keeping a low profile with all these larger whales in the area.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins have been mostly in Discovery Pass and up Johnstone Strait happy to harrass the Northern Resident (fish eating) Orca. A few Harbour Porpoise were spotted, but they are known to be shy.

Susan MacKay, Wild Ocean Whale Society
