Humpback Whales Breaching All Over the Place

Cover Image:
Bigg’s Killer Whales heading southwest by Rebecca Spit

Although Transient Biggs are being seen up and down the regions, the Humpback Whales are being noted for breaching as they return in numbers to our central and upper Georgia Strait. Neither of these two species want to mix it up as for the Orca, it means serious damage from an adult Humpback. The Humpbacks would rather be in the next channel over than to face the confrontation. There are many interesting observations of the inter speecies relationships we catalogue.

Although there are many of the smaller pecies in our waters, many forget that we monitor them also as part of the overall picture we present. Our information is used by many for research, conservation efforts and monitring of the health and welfare of our ecosystems.

We keep reminding people to report and not to expect that “someone else must have reported”. Every sighting report is incredibly valuable. One person may see only one animal, where another sees five. This is huge for determinations, even if they aren’t obvious at the time of reporting, as to who these animals might be.

On publishing the last report, we received word of one Transient Bigg’s, T077A, that very morning, who had been in the upper Georgia Strait, who managed to become entangled in some prawn gear off Saturna Island. He was the lucky one and was disentangled. I cannot stress enough how your trap gear can become a death trap for animals. We struggle to educate fishers as well as the general public about the threats we humans create in our environment.

Please keep your eyes open and report your sightings to us. Our reports are being used by all those from policy makers, researchers, to those who are simply interested in the wellbeing of our waters and the species within.

It looked like he was actually co-operating’: Entangled orca rescued off Salt Spring Island
CBC News + CTV News

Keith Simpson was heading out fishing with his wife on Thursday morning when they spotted the killer whale from their boat between Vesuvius and Crofton.

The Salt Spring Island couple slowed down to snap a picture of the orca, but what they saw when they got a bit closer put their fishing trip on hold.

“We realized it wasn’t actually going anywhere. It was just going around and around,” Simpson said.

The whale was tangled in a fishing line for a prawn trap.

The couple called 911 and reached a marine rescue crew from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Simpson and his wife, Suzanne Ambers, were told to keep an eye on the whale…

Over 1,500 Dolphins Snout-Ride on Mom/Calf Humpback Whales in Monterey Bay
Monterey Bay Whale Watch

We were watching over 1,500 dolphins of two species; Pacific White-Sided Dolphins and Northern Right Whale Dolphins. The second type are rare to see except we see them periodically in Monterey Bay due to deep water so close to shore. Theses dolphins are unusual and are shaped like torpedoes, have no dorsal fin, and are all black with a white underside. On this day they had some small gray calves with them. This large school of dolphins encounters a mother and calf Humpback Whale and some dolphins began to "snout ride" of them. That’s when dolphins, which are very playful and intelligent, annoy the Humpbacks a bit by buzzing around their head and causing the large whales to move quickly forward allowing the dolphins to surf off the wave created by the whale’s head. The dolphins seem to really enjoy this and the whales aren’t really bothered. The Humpback calf was born in Mexico about 4 months ago and now he’s here with mom in Monterey Bay to learn how to catch fish and krill. In this case the little whale is experiencing the excitement of swimming around hundreds of dolphins! For Use Must Ask and Credit Monterey Bay Whale Watch/ Gowhales.com (Video by Jason Berring)…

International Whaling Commission on Māui dolphins
Scoop. NZ
With only 57 adult Māui dolphins left, The International Whaling Commission calls for immediate action to protect critically-endangered Māui dolphins

Today the International Whaling Commission has called on the New Zealand government to remove dangerous fishing nets from Māui dolphin habitat.

The Commission has recommended this country give "highest priority" to protecting these critically-endangered dolphins from accidental deaths in the kind of fishing nets that pose the highest risk: set nets and conventional trawl nets.

Currently less than 8 per cent of Māui dolphin habitat is protected from both these kind of fishing. One of the recommendations made by the Commission was to close fisheries in waters where Māui dolphins live….
