Concern Over Bigg’s T073B in Comox, Active Humpbacks and More

Cover Image:
Humpback in front of Powell River with trap line in mouth may still be entangled

Concern rises over Transient Bigg’s T073B’s behaviour and the number of boats and other vessels in the Comox Harbour. Although he appears healthy, this is highly unusual to have an Orca stay in one location this long. Dept. of Fisheries is monitoring him and working on keeping vessels at a proper distance.

Northern Resident Killer Whales have made half hearted attempts to work their way down Johnstone Strait, but chose to stay in the upper reaches, while other Transient Bigg’s are travelling through and into the inlets after short feeding breaks. Calves are being taught to hunt and seem to enjoy playing and breaching.

Humpback Whales are in huge numbers all over the upper Georgia Strait and have been actively tail and pectoral fin slapping, as well as breaching. Of concern is that the risk of entanglements has increased with these whales coming closer to the Mainland side where more traps seem to be set closer together. The cover photo shows a line in one Humpback’s mouth. We can’t tell if the line is also wrapped around this whale’s pectoral fin or even farther down the animal. With no float seen anywhere around the whale, it was only after reviewing my photos that the line was noticed. We tried to locate the animal again, but have not had success as of yet.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins have grouped up again to forage in numbers around 100, and a few Dall’s and Harbour Porpoise sightings, as well as Sea Otters, complete this report.

There have been many near misses with boaters almost striking whales. Slow Down Please!
Keep your eyes open, report your sightings to us, and use caution on the water giving these animals plenty of room. Stop and smell the fish breath.
