Humpback Soup On The Water

Humpback showing off off of Quadra Island
Kurt Staples, Eagle Eye Adventures

It’s estimated that we have somewhere in the neighbourhood of 40 Humpbacks already in the upper Georgia Strait and local inlets at this time. And there are more arriving. We find it unusual that there is no food for them close to the mainland side of the strait. Could this be from the draggers? Last dragger seen in front of Powell River was just a week or so ago.

We remind all boaters to be aware of all of the species. There have been a number of vessel strikes of both Orca and Humpbacks, and entanglements are a real threat from fishing gear. Please Slow Down and pay attention. We are sharing their space. We are happy that boaters are hailing other boaters on the VHF about animals in the area. This helps us with avoidance and awareness. Thank you.

Our “resident” Transient Bigg’s Orca, the T002C family pod have been meandering through the channels and inlets, while other Bigg’s have just transitted through the region. We have also heard that the Northern Resident Orca made an appearance in the Broughton’s, even though we don’t have an official report.

The smaller species, Dolphins and Porpoise are not being reported as often as we’d hope due to the larger Humpbacks putting on some incredible shows. But the Pacific White Sided Dolphins are staying close to some favourite feeding grounds.

With our Sightings Reports set to publish so soon, our Magazine section is not included this time. All that we do is a huge volunteer effort to make our society work and publish our reports. We are constantly working to provide high quality information to all of you.

Keep your eyes open, report your sightings to us, and use caution on the water giving these animals plenty of room.

Real Time Monitoring Station Live Update:

Our Cetacean Web Camera YouTube Channel is live. We’re continueing to work on resolving transmission problems causing the intermittent bouncy images from the Beach Gardens Marina camera. Our second (backup) live stream mounted in Powell River appears when the Beach Gardens camera is down. We appreciate your patience.

Thank You to our Volunteers and Contributors!
