Whales Following Food

Cover Image:
Pacific white-sided dolphins at McMullen Point.

As more whale species work their way into our inside waters between Vancouver Island and the Mainland, every year we notice a few changes. This year many of the Humpback Whales, still working their way into Georgia Strait, haven’t come up through Juan de Fuca, but have been coming down Johnstone Strait and the through the various channels. We also had fewer stay over winter than in past years.

Behaviours tend to change gradually as these intelligent animals learn about their surroundings and from one another. We routinely see Orca teaching their young how to forage, hunt and more. Previously, we had only heard of the Offshore species of Orca creating a wave to wash a seal off patches of ice. We now regularly see Transient Bigg’s Orca join together to create a wave to wash a seal off rocks. Their intelligence and powers of deduction are amazing.

Favourite foraging spots bring regular visitors. Pacific White Sided Dolphins are once again being seen in numbers in their favourite areas in Nodales Channel. This seems to be just one of their favourite foraging areas and also offers other channels they can flee preditors through. They do get caught at times in harbours and inlets, as we saw in our previous publication issue.

Foraging areas are definitely dependant upon where the food is, and usually relates to where Cetacea and other species travel as they follow the food. A good example of this is that since the large krill die off from an algae bloom we had a few months ago, between Texada and the Mainland, there have been fewer animals of any sort seen in Malaspina Strait. With krill being one of the primary foods for fish, whales and birds, we are seeing the whales staying on the Vancouver Island side of Georgia Strait for now. This area is slowly recovering, but nature takes her own time.

Boaters, please use caution on the water. There are Cetaceans out there. Effective June 1st, Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the animals. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
