Whales in Canada

Humpback surprises whale watching tour.

As we celebrate Canada Day this coming week, it is truly remarkable for us to live here in this country with so much natural beauty around us to enjoy. From the mild climate to the towering mountains to the diversity of plants and animals, one can only be in awe of this magnificent environment. Here in British Columbia, the oceans is rich in life with kelp, fish, invertebrates, seals, and of course whales and dolphins (Cetaceans). There are over 20 species of Cetaceans here in B.C. waters with about 7 species that are more commonly observed, whether by land or by boat. We are fortunate to be able to see these large and graceful animals!

Many Humpback whales were observed in various inland waterways. Some observers were able to see Humpbacks breaching such as those on the boat in our cover image. Humpbacks can stay underwater for 10 minutes and can breach at a location far from where they were last seen at the surface. On occasion, the breaching whales will surprise boaters who were at a distance but the whales approached them. Humpbacks can display other surface activities such as pectoral slapping, lunge feeding, and tail lobbing. Rounding our report are sightings of Transient Orca, Pacific White-Sided dolphins, Dall’s porpoise, and Harbour Porpoise. Of note is a grouping of approximately 29 Transient Orca in Georgia Strait near the mouth of the Fraser River. The Transients were from 5 different pods/families and they were very active at the surface.

Boaters, please use caution on the water. There are Cetaceans out there. Effective June 1st, Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the animals. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
