Orca Waving

Cover Image:
Transient Biggs Orca – the T18s and T19B – making their way along the Denham Bay Shoreline
Nick Templeman, Campbell River Whale and Bear Excursions

Many Transient Orca were observed; these Orca eat other mammals such as porpoises, dolphins, seals, and sea lions. There were no sightings of Resident Orca reported to us; Resident Orca eat fish, mainly salmon. Orca display many behaviours at the surface, such as breaching and tail slaps. Occasionally as in our cover image, one might be lucky to see an Orca swim with their belly facing upward with their pectoral fins in the air, as if waving and greeting an observer. Orca are extremely intelligent and they have strong relationships with other members of their pod. They stay with their mother for most of their lives.

Similar to most of our other publications, more than 70% of sightings reported to us are of Humpback whales. Many of these whales have strong site fidelity so they most likely are being observed regularly. A number of Pacific White-Sided dolphin pods were large with approximately 100 members each. A couple of sightings of Dall’s porpoises round out our report.

Boaters, please use caution on the water. Effective June 1st, Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the whales/dolphins. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.

Note that the release of our regular publications will be interrupted over the next few weeks. Your reports of Cetacean sightings will be processed still, but at a slower rate, due to the changes of the availability of our volunteers. We will be working hard to catch up.

We acknowledge that our sightings map and archive map are not fully functional at this time, and we are working to resolve the issue.

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
