Very Active Humpback Whales

Humpbacks breaching in Sutil Channel
Stuart Clark, Eagle Eye Adventures

In this first catch-up report, Humpback Whales are still showing off with their impressive breaching all throughout our inside waters. The most asked question is ‘why do Humpbacks breach’? The truth is that we can only guess at the reasons. Thoughts are so varied that the usual answer is ‘because they can’. Various possible reasons are: helps with digesting the massive amount of food they take in, show of dominance, play, feels like a good scratch, knocks off some of the sea lice, barnacles and even seaweed they seem to collect on their bodies, are just to list a few.

Northern Resident Orca stayed in Johnstone Strait while Transient Bigg’s Orca were seen in areas of Desolation Sound and other parts of Georgia Strait. Pacific White-Sided dolphins were seen travelling with Resident (fish eating) Orca as well as larger groups staying clear of the Transient Bigg’s (meat eating) Orca. A few playful Dall’s porpoise were seen above the faster moving waters of the Yuculta rapids.

Boaters, please use caution on the water. Effective June 1st, Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the whales/dolphins. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.

Note that the release of our regular publications will be interrupted over the next few weeks. Your reports of Cetacean sightings will be processed still, but at a slower rate, due to the changes of the availability of our volunteers. We will be working hard to catch up.

We acknowledge that our sightings map and archive map are not fully functional at this time, and we are working to resolve the issue.

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
