Hair on Whales!

Cover Image:
Humpback getting up close and personal

Whales do have hair but very little of it! Whales are mammals and were once land animals over 50 million years ago. Similar to other land mammals past and present, they had fur and hair. However when they transitioned over to living in the ocean, whales gradually lost their hair. After close examination of some species of Cetaceans, one can see a few strands of hair such as along their snout/chin usually on young whales and dolphins. However, Humpback whales are different and have hair even as adults. Humpbacks have knobs on their snout above and below the mouth called tubercles (see our cover image). Tubercles are oversized hair follicles with a hair sticking out of it by only a few centimeters. Because there is a lot of nerve tissue in tubercles, scientist theorize that tubercles is a sensory structure.

Of note in this report is some Northern Resident Orca made it to the east end of Johnstone Strait on September 4 and over the course of the day, the Orca travelled west going up Johnstone Strait. One Minke whale was reported off Beaver Cove, near Telegraph Cove. In addition, two pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins numbered in the hundreds.

Boaters, please use caution on the water. Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Southern Resident Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the whales/dolphins. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.

We acknowledge that our sightings map and archive map are not fully functional at this time, and we are working to resolve the issue.

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
