Pacific White-Sided Dolphins flying!

Cover Image:
Pacific White-Sided Dolphins in Homfray Channel

Pacific White-Sided dolphins are fast swimmers and they can reach speeds of approximately 40 km/h. Often when they are swimming fast and travelling in a certain direction, these dolphins will leap clear out of the water horizontally as in our cover image. If they decide to swim vertically towards the surface, then the dolphins will leave the water and potentially reach heights of 4 to 5 meters above the surface. Pacific White-Sided dolphins have remained in Toba Inlet and Pryce Channel, and some of them have remained in large pods.

Northern Resident Orca have been observed at two locations in Johnstone Strait while Transient Orca were seen in many waterways and inlets. Some Humpback whales were breaching, pectoral slapping, and bubble net feeding. Humpbacks have been in Calm Channel, Lewis Channel, Sutil Channel, Discovery Passage, and upper Georgia Strait, just to name a few. A number of Dall’s porpoises were reported as well as one sighting of Harbour porpoise and one sighting of a sea otter.

Boaters, please use caution on the water. Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Southern Resident Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the whales/dolphins. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.

We acknowledge that our sightings map and archive map are not fully functional at this time, and we are working to resolve the issue.

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
