Orca tend to stay with their families and travel with them; this social organization is observed in Resident Orca and Transient Orca. The oldest female is the leader of the pod, and the pod would include her offspring and potentially her “grand-children” as well as “great-grand-children”. Resident Orca often are observed in a large group and such groups would include a few pods/families. A Transient Orca pod usually comprise of one family but on occasion, a few families of Transient Orca may join to form a larger pod for hunting.
This report includes sightings of Transient Orca, Humpback whales, Pacific White-Sided dolphins, and a few porpoises. In addition, a couple of Sea Otters were observed around Mitlenatch Island. The Sea Otter population has been slowly increasing over the past few decades, but the population still remains significantly lower compared to the estimated population of Sea Otters during the 18th Century before the hunting for them began (for their fur). Consider yourself very fortunate to see a Sea Otter in the wild!
Boaters, please use caution on the water. Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Southern Resident Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the whales/dolphins. If you come across some Orca and you are uncertain if they are Southern Resident Orca, it is best to still maintain your distance of 400-m. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.
We acknowledge that our sightings map and archive map are not fully functional at this time, and we are working to resolve the issue.
WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
