Younger Whales learn from Adults

Cover Image:
Humpback calf breaching between the Powell River Viewpoint and Grief Point
Michelle Pennell, Powell River, BC

Calves and juvenile whales learn from their mothers and other adults. Behaviours such as feeding techniques, hunting strategies, and surface activities (such as tail slapping) are learned behaviours. Our cover images shows a young Humpback whale breaching near two adults one of which is presumed to be the mother. The young whale probably learned to breach from his or her mother, but also possible that the young whale learned to breach on his own.

Of worthy note are two Grey whales that were seen in Jervis Inlet on October 14th near the Saltery Bay Ferry Terminal. Some other animal was with them making extremely loud noises and could possibly be a sea lion. We also received 3 sighting reports of Minke whales, and in each case, there were a pair of whales. Two of these sightings were near Hardy Island (south of Powell River) and one was by the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Minke whales tend to be solitary animals so these sightings are unique with two whales each time.

Boaters, please use caution on the water. Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Southern Resident Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the whales/dolphins. If you come across some Orca and you are uncertain if they are Southern Resident Orca, it is best to still maintain your distance of 400-m. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.

We acknowledge that our sightings map and archive map are not fully functional at this time, and we are working to resolve the issue.

WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

Rare Footage of Whales Blowing ‘Bubble Nets’ to Capture Prey in a Vortex of Doom
LiveScience
Blowing bubbles at the dinner table is generally considered to be very bad manners by human standards. But for humpback whales, it’s a necessary part of trapping their dinner; humpbacks blow streams of spiraling bubbles to form “nets” of air around groups of the tiny marine creatures that the whales eat.

Recently, researchers captured rare footage of this incredible sight, using cameras flying overhead and attached to feeding whales in waters near southeastern Alaska….
