Pods of Dolphins

Cover Image:
Pacific White Sided Dolphins travelling close to shore!

There are many species of dolphins that live here off the B.C. Coast. One type of dolphin that is seen regularly are the Pacific White-Sided dolphins. They travel in pods of various sizes; small pods may be approximately ten individuals and large pods may include over 100 or more members. These dolphins surface regularly and they travel together so they are easy to notice and observe. Pacific White-Sided dolphins were sighted in Discovery Passage and Johnstone Strait. One report includes one baby Pacific White-Sided dolphin observed amongst a pod.

Can you guess which other type of dolphin is regularly seen here in B.C.? If you thought of Orca, then you are correct. Orca are the largest type of dolphins in the world, eventhough they are commonly thought of as whales (Killer whales). The most common type of whales seen here in B.C. are Grey whales and Humpback whales, which can be seen at different times of the year in different parts of the coast. Currently, there are many Humpback whales being reported daily in upper Georgia Strait, Sutil Channel, and Calm Channel. Keep your eyes open when you are on the shore or out on the water – there is many opportunities to see whales ande dolphins!

The Federal Government (DFO) statement about watching whales in the wild: “To address disturbance in the presence of whales, a mandatory 400-metre vessel approach distance for all killer whales is in effect starting June 1, 2020 in all southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet. The Marine Mammal Regulations continue to remain in effect year-round, including maintaining a minimum 200 metre approach distance from all killer whales in Canadian Pacific waters other than described above, and 100 metres for other whales, porpoises and dolphins OR 200 metres when the animal is in resting position or with a calf.”

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

Campbell River marine naturalist raises alarm on entangled whale
Cloverdale Reporter
A humpback whale appearing to have become entangled in fishing gear near Campbell River looks to have broken free on its own, but the event shows how boaters should respond to help.

While leading a whale watching tour on Aug. 9, Kaitlin Paquette, marine naturalist with Discovery Marine Safaris, noticed a pair of whales off Cortes Reef. Paquette considered their observed behaviour atypical, as they were not showing any flukes or diving….

Rare footage shows elusive ‘yellow whales’ in stunning detail

A San Diego-based ecotour operator has captured stunning aerial footage, perhaps first of its kind, showing Cuvier’s beaked whales swimming along the surface.

"You’ve heard of blue whales, you’ve heard of gray whales, you’ve probably even heard legends of white whales, but have you ever heard of a yellow whale?" Dom Biagini, owner of Gone Whale Watching San Diego, asked on Facebook after his encounter last Saturday. "A weekend of incredible sightings was capped by a remarkable encounter with Cuvier’s beaked whales: one of the most elusive and mysterious cetaceans on earth!"…
