Humpbacks have Returned!

Humpbacks swimming in synchrony!
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys Whale and Grizzly Bear Tours

Over the past few weeks, the number of Humpback whale sightings has increased in the upper Georgia Strait area and in Discovery Passage. Some of these Humpbacks were breaching and also observed were a few mother-calf pairs. Many Transient Orca were observed in the area, and a couple of pods were seen hunting. On May 28, a pod of Transient Orca, the T090s, were first seen in the morning near Octopus Islands in Okisollo Channel and by late afternoon, they had travelled past the south end of Quadra Island. In a period of about 6 hours, the T090s had swam just over 30-km and it shows how much they do travel in one day. Orca were also reported in Halfmoon Bay and in Active Pass. The Orca in Active Pass could have been the Southern Resident Orca as they were seen in the area the previous day.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay at least 400 m away from all killer whales in southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and Ucluelet, including Barkley and Howe Sound. This is in effect year-round until May 31, 2023. If killer whales approach any vessel, boaters should place their engine in neutral and wait for the animals to pass.”

For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca. When viewing other species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
