Orca Hunting

Killer Whales blowing by heavy vessel wakes
Michelle Pennell, Powell River, BC

Over the last reporting period, many Orca were seen most of which were Transient Orca. On at least two occasions, Transients were seen hunting their prey. There were a few sightings reported of Northern Resident Orca in Johnstone Strait. A large group of Resident Orca were seen also off of Lasqueti Island on August 9th but they were not confirmed as either the Northern Resident or Southern Resident Orca.

As usual, there were many Humpback whales sighted with some displaying unique behaviours such as breaching, lunge feeding, bubble-net feeding, and pectoral slapping. There were many pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins – the largest pod was estimated to include 200 members. Rounding our report are two sightings of Harbour porpoises.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay at least 400 m away from all killer whales in southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and Ucluelet, including Barkley and Howe Sound. This is in effect year-round until May 31, 2023. If killer whales approach any vessel, boaters should place their engine in neutral and wait for the animals to pass.”

For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca. When viewing other species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

Scientists Have Built a Real-Time Sperm Whale Collision Detection System
Hakai Magazine
In the Mediterranean Sea, a prototype whale detection system can use the clicks of a sperm whale to pinpoint its location in three-dimensional space with an accuracy of 30 to 40 meters-only a body length or two for these 16-meter-long whales. In tests using both artificial pings and the sounds emanating from real sperm whales, researchers showed that the system can provide enough notice for a nearby ship to change direction or slow down when a whale is in its path….
