Why Whales Breach – Humpback Whales and Dolphins

Humpback breaching!

Understanding that an average size Humpback Whale is approximately the size of a bus, 40 ft. (just over 12M) and can weigh in the neighbourhood of 66,000 lbs (30,000 kg) can help put perspective into seeing this large animal coming totally out of the water in a full breach. Spectacular! Wanting to expend this much energy must be for a good reason right? Theories through observations indicate breaching might aid in their digestion after consuming a sufficient amount of food helping push some of their food father into their digestive tract. Apart from what appears to be play during socializing or in larger seas, they may be attempting to dislodge some of the barnacles and kelp growth off their generally slower moving bodies. One other aspect of breaching is in preparation for mating selection by showing off their power.

Dolphins are generally very gregarious and frequently breach and leap during play, but also to herd fish. The lead Dolphin will breach over and over again landing with a belly or sideways flop helping chase their food in a certain direction. Then the group of Dolphins will suddenly stop and turn to feed on the now corralled fish. Of course, when they are being hunted by Orca, both Dolphins and Porpoise will leap out of the water in flight mode to avoid being caught.

Our previous report issue covered Orca.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay at least 400 m away from all killer whales in southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and Ucluelet, including Barkley and Howe Sound. This is in effect year-round until May 31, 2023. If killer whales approach any vessel, boaters should place their engine in neutral and wait for the animals to pass.”

For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca. When viewing other species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
