Whale Tails!

Transient Biggs Killer Whale
Nick Templeman, Campbell River Whale and Bear Excursions

Occasionally, one may be fortunate to see the tails (flukes) of whales. It may be when whales are diving, breaching, playing on the surface, or even when they do tail lobs. When chasing and hunting their prey, Transient Orca may exit the water completely as they move quickly to catch their prey allowing us a brief glimpse of their tails. Transient Orca may also use their tails to stun their prey, slowing them down enough for the Orca to eat them. For Humpback whales, the underside of their tails are used to indentify each whale as the colour pattern is different and unique for each individual. The colour of the underside of Humpback tails may be mainly dark, mainly white, or a mix of dark and white. Capturing a photo of a Humpback’s tail is always challenging but once a photo is taken, it can be used to identify the whale.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay at least 400 m away from all killer whales in southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and Ucluelet, including Barkley and Howe Sound. This is in effect year-round until May 31, 2023. If killer whales approach any vessel, boaters should place their engine in neutral and wait for the animals to pass.”

For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca. When viewing other species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
