Whale tails!

Humpbacks diving together!
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys Whale and Grizzly Bear Tours

Whale watchers get excited when they see the tails (also called flukes) of whales and dolphins. If you see a Humpback whale raise its tail out of the water, the whale will be taking a long dive which could last between 5 to 15 minutes. Tails can be used to identify specific individual Humpbacks because each tail pattern is different, similar to us using our fingerprints to identify each person. One needs to examine the contour of the trailing edge of the tail and the colouration pattern of the underside of the tail to identify the Humpback whale – the colour pattern could be mainly dark, mainly white (light), or a mix of the two. One needs to get a good photo of the underside of the tail of the Humpback and compare with a Identification Catalog to identify the whale.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay 400m away from all killer whales in southern BC coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet until May 31, 2024.” For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca OR while viewing any Cetaceans that are resting or with a calf. When viewing whales, dolphins, and porpoises under other circumstances not described above, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

10:45 • 1 Humpback Whales off Beach Gardens Marina, Powell River, Malaspina Strait. We stopped our power boat off Grief Point, to allow a tug to go past (he was towing a barge) so we could turn into Beach Gardens to get gas. We hadn’t been stopped for 20sec when we saw a whale’s pectoral fin off our port side. He was slightly ahead of us and cut straight across our path heading for Texada. The Humpback had a beautiful tail fluke with no nicks or marks of entanglement. This is the closest we’ve ever been to a whale. He was maybe 70-100 yds from us.
