Identifying Individual Orca!

Cover Image:
Transient Biggs Killer Whale, Chainsaw
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys Whale and Grizzly Bear Tours

Many pods of Transient Orca were observed during the past week. Individual Orca can be identified by the shape of their dorsal fin, and the patterns of their eyepatch as well as their saddlepatch (located on the back posterior to the dorsal fin). The cover image shows one of the more easily identified Transient Biggs Orca here in British Columbia catalogged as T063 and nicknamed “Chainsaw”, due to the nicks on its dorsal fin making it look like a saw. The dorsal fin which is approximately 2-meters tall indicates that Chainsaw is an adult male. If you observe any Transient Orca or even Resident Orca, try to see the differences in the shapes of their dorsal fins. Share your sightings and pictures of Orca with us, and perhaps, the Orca can be identified!

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay 400m away from all killer whales in southern BC coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet until May 31, 2024.” For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca OR while viewing any Cetaceans that are resting or with a calf. When viewing whales, dolphins, and porpoises under other circumstances not described above, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.
