Pacific White Sided Dolphins leaping through the air
Michelle Pennell, Powell River, BC

Pacific White-Sided dolphins are very common along the coast and in waterways of British Columbia. They can be in small pods with 10 individuals or they can be seen in large pods that include a few hundred individuals. These dolphins are active at the surface whether travelling and porpoising, or they could be acrobatic as they leave the water and do a few spins or flips in the air. Eventhough they are called white-sided dolphins, their flanks are a light grey colour and appears light (or white) compared to the darker grey colouration of the dorsal side of their bodies. The side of these dolphins that are actually white is the ventral (stomach) side and it can be seen. Let us know if you see Pacific White-Sided dolphins or any other Cetaceans in your travels!

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay 400m away from all killer whales in southern BC coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet until May 31, 2024.” For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca OR while viewing any Cetaceans that are resting or with a calf. When viewing whales, dolphins, and porpoises under other circumstances not described above, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.
