Although the most sightings reported are still Humpback Whales, Pacific White Sided Dolphins took center stage for a while in Discovery Passage in particular. These animals are the acrobats of our oceans and have been know to leap as high as 25 feet in the air while performing flips and aerial manoeuvres individually or in tight formations. It’s a thrilling spectacle to watch, especially when there are so many together. Dolphins love to bow and wake ride and for boaters this can be quite a thrill, but please remember to let them come to you and do not make any quick manoeuvers. As quick as they are, they have been struck by boats. Keep your boat going in a consistent line without speeding up or slowing down quickly if they come over to ride with you.
An unusual sighting came in with both PWS Dolphins and Dall’s Porpoise foraging together by the Dent Rapids. They normally keep to their own species. Both Dall’s and Harbour Porpoise can frequently be seen together and we are aware of some hybrids in the area.
Transient Bigg’s Orca and Humpback Whales have been seen in close proximity, but with the number of Humpbacks in the upper Georgia Strait and in the various channels, the Orca really have no choice but to be relatively close to be able to pass each other.
Boaters, please use caution on the water. Effective June 1st, Federal laws require boats to remain at least 400-m away when viewing Orca and for other Cetaceans, laws require boats to remain at least 100-m from the whales/dolphins. Remember N.E.W.S. when you see a whale, meaning put your boat in NEUTRAL, ENJOY the view, WAIT till the whales are at a fair distance, and then SLOWLY leave the scene.
Note that the release of our regular publications will be interrupted over the next few weeks. Your reports of Cetacean sightings will be processed still, but at a slower rate, due to the changes of the availability of our volunteers. We will be working hard to catch up.
We acknowledge that our sightings map and archive map are not fully functional at this time, and we are working to resolve the issue.
WOWs works throught the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

breaching, heading south on the south west side of Savary Island, Georgia Strait.
Appeared to be Dad showing baby how to hunt and Mom was further back smacking her tail on the water as if to warn them of the boats nearby who spotted them. They were very close to the wharf at Savary and seemed to be teaching the smaller one who was having a ball breaching. We definitely kept our distance and the other vessels did same. A kayaker was likely surprised by the sighting. They were quite active. About 7 pm, on the south west side of Savary, from our deck at the cottage, we saw the family again fishing off the reef out front at the far end of it. They kept going and eventually we couldn’t see them. I have video and photos that I can email. ▫ From Power or Sail Boat
