Whales, dolphins, and porpoises belong to a group called Cetacea, and they are a delight to watch out in the sea. Observers always want to capture those special moments with Cetaceans by taking pictures of these wonderful animals. Often, it is very challenging to get a really good photo of a Cetacean; a person needs to predict where the whale may surface while trying to balance oneself as the boat rocks and hold the camera steady. Many photos (or videos) may be taken before one of the photos is “picture perfect”. Our cover image shows a Humpback whale spouting and a rainbow is visible in the blow. Perfect timing of the photo!
Our report contains over 80 sightings of Humpback whales. A number of them were feeding, with one Humpback observed bubble-net feeding. Bubble-net feeding is when a Humpback is swimming in a circle underneath a school of fish and releasing air out of its blowhole which form bubbles. The bubbles in a circular pattern rise to the surface of the water trapping the fish inside the circle, and the Humpback swims up through the circle of bubbles to engulf the fish. There were a number of sightings of Transient Biggs Orca and a few sightings of Northern Resident Orca travelling through inland channels and waterways. A few pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins were observed, with the largest pod numbering around 200 members.
The Federal Government (DFO) statement about watching whales in the wild: “To address disturbance in the presence of whales, a mandatory 400-metre vessel approach distance for all killer whales is in effect starting June 1, 2020 in all southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet. The Marine Mammal Regulations continue to remain in effect year-round, including maintaining a minimum 200 metre approach distance from all killer whales in Canadian Pacific waters other than described above, and 100 metres for other whales, porpoises and dolphins OR 200 metres when the animal is in resting position or with a calf.”
WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
