Over the past two weeks, a diversity of Cetaceans was observed in Georgia Strait and many different waterways. Many pods of Transient Orca were seen but none of them were in large pods as observed in early May and back in April. The number of Humpback whales observed have increased and there are a few mother-calf pairs in the area. One Grey whale appeared near Gibsons along the sunshine coast. Small pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins as well as Dall’s porpoises were observed. Rounding our report are sightings of Harbour porpoises. Of note is a large pod of Harbour porpoises that included over 20 members sighted in upper Georgia Strait and two Harbour Porpoises that appeared off of the pier at White Rock. Keep your eyes when you are out near the water and let us know what you see!
The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay at least 400 m away from all killer whales in southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and Ucluelet, including Barkley and Howe Sound. This is in effect year-round until May 31, 2023. If killer whales approach any vessel, boaters should place their engine in neutral and wait for the animals to pass.”
For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca. When viewing other species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

09:00 • 2 Harbour Porpoise moving slowly, heading south-west from the pier at Semiahmoo Bay, White Rock, Georgia Strait. We were watching 2 porpoises (color black or dark grey) from the pier of White Rock. They came from the south and then turn on the west. We could spot them 5 minutes before they left. ▫ Observed from Shore
