Whales and dolphins use various strategies to capture their prey and to feed. Humpback whales are known for a few methods, such as bubble-net feeding. Humpbacks will swim in a circle below their prey (schooling fish) and while doing so, they would release air from their blowholes to create a net of bubbles that surround the fish. The Humpbacks would swim up through the bubble net and engulf the fish. Humpbacks also use the lunge-feeding method and unique to some of the Humpback whales along the north-east side of Vancouver Island is the trap-feeding method. To see a Humpback foraging would be amazing as you might see their baleen hanging from their upper jaw or you might see how much water they would engulf as their ventral throat pleats expand.
The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay at least 400 m away from all killer whales in southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and Ucluelet, including Barkley and Howe Sound. This is in effect year-round until May 31, 2023. If killer whales approach any vessel, boaters should place their engine in neutral and wait for the animals to pass.”
For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca. When viewing other species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

Sperm whales in the Pacific Ocean make distinct vocalizations that help them identify whales in different clans, a new study from a team including an Oregon State University researcher found.
These vocalizations, called "identity codas," are unique sequences of Morse code-like clicking sounds that function as symbolic markers of different social groups and are indicative of whale culture, researchers say….
