Humpbacks Breaching!

Humpback Whale Breaching
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys Whale and Grizzly Bear Tours

During the past week, many Humpback whales were seen of which a few were observed breaching. For a full-body breach, a Humpback must expend high amounts of energy to gain enough speed underwater to allow them to leave the water vertically. The splash created by a whale after re-entering the water from a breach can be seen and heard from many kilometers away. A few Transient Orca were observed hunting their prey. Go to our magazine section to read about Transient Orca making their way on August 21st into Departure Bay, Nanaimo. Rounding our report are sightings of pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins, of which a few pods were large (included up to approximately 200 members).

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay at least 400 m away from all killer whales in southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and Ucluelet, including Barkley and Howe Sound. This is in effect year-round until May 31, 2023. If killer whales approach any vessel, boaters should place their engine in neutral and wait for the animals to pass.”

For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca. When viewing other species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

Blue whales are the largest creatures on the planet and can weigh more than 150 tons, so only rarely are the great leviathans observed traveling at high speeds.

But on Monday off Dana Point, Ca., boaters were in awe as at least three blue whales, perhaps feeling amorous, exhibited racing behavior in a spectacle described by one naturalist as "one for the record books."…
