During the past week, some of the Northern Resident Orca appeared at the top end of Georgia Strait and in the surrounding waterways like Sutil Channel as well as Malaspina Strait. The Orca were identified as the A42s and were in the area from July 8 to July 12. These Orca tend to be seen around the northern half of Vancouver Island and further northward. The Southern Resident Orca made an appearance off of Texada Island on July 5 but no other reports were received to indicate where they may have gone from there. The Southern Resident Orca tend to live along the southern half of Vancouver Island and further southward. Resident Orca eat fish compared to the Transient Orca which eat marine mammals like seals. Let us know what you see in your travels and when you are out on the water!

If you get out on the water frequently whether paddling, kayaking, or as a boater, please consider completing an online survey regarding marine mammals and boater safety. The survey is being conducted by the Marine Education and Research Society, and those that complete the survey can enter a draw to win some prizes. Go to our Magazine section to find the weblinks and more information.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay 400m away from all killer whales in southern BC coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet until May 31, 2024.” For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca OR while viewing any Cetaceans that are resting or with a calf. When viewing whales, dolphins, and porpoises under other circumstances not described above, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

Boater and Marine Mammals Survey
Marine Education and Research Society
Please can you help? There are big prizes and big gratitude!

It’s about a survey for all of you who are recreational boaters in British Columbia, be it with motor or paddle. The survey will only take 5 to 10 minutes.

We are making an online course addressing boater safety and marine mammals. We need MANY boaters to do this survey to understand what information about laws and best practices is, and is not, reaching recreational boaters, and what the limiting factors might be. Your answers to the survey will help inform the direction of our education.

Survey answers are confidential….
