Humpback Whales in many Waterways

Humpbacks taking a deep dive!
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys Whale and Grizzly Bear Tours

During the past week, many Humpback whales were observed in many areas. Humpback whales were reported from the Texada Island & Powell River area, all the way north to Johnstone Strait, and in many waterways in-between those areas. You don’t need to be on a boat to view Humpback whales because many can be seen from land. One might see their blows or even hear their blows to know that a Humpback is present. Sometimes, splashes can be seen as Humpbacks lunge-feed, do tail slaps, or breach. If you are trying to see any Cetaceans from land, you need a lot of patience and luck; a pair of binoculars would be very helpful in locating them too.

Some of the Northern Resident Orca have remained in the upper Georgia Strait and Sutil Channel area, making it two consecutive weeks they have been there. Of note is a pair of Minke whales that appeared near Stillwater Bluffs (south of Powell River) on July 13; the two Minke’s appeared to be a mother-calf pair.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay 400m away from all killer whales in southern BC coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet until May 31, 2024.” For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca OR while viewing any Cetaceans that are resting or with a calf. When viewing whales, dolphins, and porpoises under other circumstances not described above, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.
