Northern Resident Orca in Upper Georgia Strait

Northern Resident Killer Whale
Garry Henkel, Aboriginal Journeys Whale and Grizzly Bear Tours

Members of the Northern Resident Orca have remained extensively in the upper Georgia Strait and other inland waterways. There are a few clues that you can use to help you identify the type of Orca (Resident or Transient) that you may be observing. Resident Orca feed on fish such as salmon whereas Transient Biggs Orca feed on marine mammals like seals and dolphins. Resident Orca usually travel in larger groups whereas Transient Orca tend to travel in smaller groups of 3-6 individuals. If you happen to get a picture of the dorsal fin and saddlepatch of an Orca, you can use the photo to identify the individual whale by comparing it with Orca Identification catalogs. Regardless of type, its always exciting to see any Orca roaming the seas!

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay 400m away from all killer whales in southern BC coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet until May 31, 2024.” For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca OR while viewing any Cetaceans that are resting or with a calf. When viewing whales, dolphins, and porpoises under other circumstances not described above, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.

WOWs works throughout the year, so please continue to keep your eyes open, and report your sightings to us.

Once in a lifetime’: New Hampshire man’s video shows 3 whales breaching at the same time

What whale falls can teach us about biodiversity and climate change
Nature
Anaëlle Durfort quantifies carbon sequestered in marine fauna for her PhD in ecology at the University of Montpellier, France, to highlight the links between biodiversity and climate change.
Why are you investigating carbon sequestration in animals?
