Pods of Pacific White Sided Dolphins

Pacific White Sided Dolphins leaping through the air!
Michelle Pennell, Powell River, BC

A number of pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins were observed during the past couple of weeks. Two of the pods were quite large, numbering around 100 individuals per pod. Pacific White-Sided dolphins can be exciting to watch as they can swim quickly in front of boats (bow-riding) and they can jump 3 to 4 meters out of the water. On occasion, one might see a pod of these dolphins just traveling extremely slow because they need to rest from their other high-energy activities.

Transient Orca and Humpback whales continue to be seen in many areas in Georgia Strait and adjacent waterways. Pods of Dall’s porpoises and Harbour porpoises round out our report. Of note was a pod of Dall’s porpoises that appeared to include some hybrid porpoises (half Dall’s porpoise and half Harbour porpoise). Hybrid porpoises have been observed in B.C. and resemble more like Dall’s porpoises without the white patch on its sides.

The Federal Government (DFO) issued the following statement about watching Orca in the wild: “Vessels must stay 400m away from all killer whales in southern BC coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet until May 31, 2024.” For all other areas of B.C. outside of the area indicated above, a minimum distance of 200-m must be maintained when viewing Orca OR while viewing any Cetaceans that are resting or with a calf. When viewing whales, dolphins, and porpoises under other circumstances not described above, a minimum distance of 100-m must be kept.
